Hardwood
Dry dust mop, a hardwood-specific cleaner in light mist, never a soaked mop and never steam. A finish in good shape sheds dirt; a worn finish absorbs it, which is when cleaning stops working.
Luxury Vinyl Plank
A pH-neutral hard-surface cleaner and a barely damp mop. LVP shrugs off water from above far better than wood, but harsh degreasers and abrasive pads dull the wear layer for good.
Refinished Floors
Fresh finish needs cure time before wet cleaning of any kind. We hand every refinishing customer the same care schedule, and the first week matters more than the next year.
Carpet
Vacuum on a schedule, blot spills instead of scrubbing, and have it hot-water extracted periodically. When traffic lanes stay gray after cleaning, the pile is worn, not dirty.
Can You Use Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner on LVP?
No, and the reason is on the label: Bona formulates its hardwood cleaner for polyurethane finished wood floors. Luxury vinyl plank is not wood and does not have that finish, so the hardwood formula is the wrong chemistry for the wear layer, can streak, and can leave a film on vinyl.
Bona makes a separate hard-surface floor cleaner intended for exactly this: vinyl, LVP, laminate and tile. If you like Bona products, that is the bottle to buy for your plank floors, and the hardwood bottle stays with the hardwood.
The good news: if you have already used the wrong one, you have probably cost yourself streaks and residue, not a ruined floor. Clean the film off with the correct pH-neutral cleaner and a well-wrung mop and the wear layer underneath is usually fine.
Which Cleaner for Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Plank
The rule for LVP and sheet vinyl is simple: pH-neutral, residue-free, no wax, no polish, no steam. That covers the dedicated luxury vinyl cleaners from the major brands, including Bona’s hard-surface line. Skip anything that promises shine in the bottle; on vinyl, "shine" is usually a coating that builds up, grabs dirt and eventually has to be stripped.
Tools matter as much as chemistry. A microfiber flat mop, damp rather than wet, does the work. String mops leave too much water at the seams and edges, and abrasive scrub pads scratch the wear layer, which is the only part of the floor protecting the print film below it.
CoreTec Encore Cleaner vs Bona: Which One for CoreTec Floors?
CoreTec sells its own branded cleaner and, like most manufacturer cleaners, it is a pH-neutral, no-rinse formula matched to its floors. Bona’s hard-surface cleaner is the same class of product and is far easier to find on a shelf. Functionally, either is a correct choice for CoreTec and comparable rigid-core LVP; what matters is that the cleaner is pH-neutral and leaves no residue, because that is what COREtec’s own care guidance calls for.What actually voids CoreTec warranties is not choosing the wrong bottle between these two. It is steam mops, wax, oil soaps and abrasives. Avoid those, use either cleaner correctly, and the floor will outlast the argument.
Caring For Hardwood After Refinishing
A freshly refinished floor is at its most vulnerable in the first days after the final coat, while the finish cures. Keep water off it entirely at first, put felt pads under everything before furniture goes back, and hold off on rugs until the finish has fully cured so it cures evenly. Your refinishing crew should tell you the exact timeline for the finish they used; ours does, in writing.
After cure, hardwood care is boring on purpose: dust mop often, clean with a hardwood-specific product in light mist, and keep grit off the floor at the doors. Boring is what keeps a refinish looking new for a decade.
What Ruins Floors: Notes From Our Repair Calls
Steam mops on wood and LVP top the list. Steam drives moisture into joints wood swells, cups and delaminates, and most vinyl manufacturers exclude steam damage from warranty outright. Second is standing water at dishwashers, fridges and door thresholds, which is a repair call waiting to happen. Third is the wrong cleaner building residue until the floor looks worn when it is really just coated.
If a floor in your house already looks past the point of cleaning, dull everywhere, gray boards, finish worn through, that is not a cleaner problem. That is a refinish, a repair, or in the worst case a replacement, and a free estimate will tell you which.
